NEW PORT RICHEY - The "Little Beast" had some extra pain to endure Wednesday afternoon.
Kalah "Little Beast" St. Pierre said she had to do some running before the Ridgewood girls weightlifting meet. She had to get her weight down so she could lift in the 110-pound class.
It was mission accomplished for the Hudson lifter, as she won her weight class. She lifted 115 pounds in the bench press and the clean and jerk for a total of 230 pounds.
"I didn't get my maximum because I didn't need to," St. Pierre said. "I just did the minimum, what I had to do to win.
"I'm a little tired today. I had to run a lot because I had to cut weight to get into the 110 weight class. I am supposed to be 110, but I was 111 or 112."
Her team is small, but the coach was impressed by the performance.
"I'm proud of my girls," said Hudson coach Tim White. "They work hard. They do really well for themselves. Kalah was our only first place today. She just works. She gets stronger. She has put in more time in the weight room than any of our girls and some of our guys. She deserves what she gets. Brittany Foster and Randi Groff did real well."
RIVER RIDGE WINS MEET: River Ridge had seven first-place finishes to win the Ridgewood meet with 60 points. Ridgewood was second with 45 points.
"Our girls actually lifted very well today," said River Ridge coach Mike DeGennaro. "We had quite a few girls have personal bests today. I was real happy. Amanda Becker, Megan Shoun, Heather Muller and Tasha Plantilla are just a few that had personal bests. We came and lifted very well. I thought it would be closer. They came ready to lift."
Shoun, a state qualifier last year, was one of the first-place winners. She won the 199-pound class with a 160-pound bench press and a 150-pound clean and jerk.
"It was very good," Shoun said. "My bench was my personal best. On the clean and jerk, I can do five more pounds, but I just decided to stop. It's way better than I did last year. I worked every day over winter break."
HEYMANN WINS 139-POUND CLASS: Ridgewood's Lauren Heymann won her 139-pound weight class, lifting 135 pounds in the bench press and clean and jerk.
"I dropped down from 154 pounds, but I am originally supposed to be in this weight class," Heymann said. "I was in the heavier weight class so other girls could lift. I was in this class at state last year.
"I know I can do better. On the clean and jerk last week I was really sick, so I did really bad. This week, I went up, but not much. I should be lifting 150 on each."
"I had a lot of girls who are preparing for conference Jan. 24 and Belleview the sectional qualifier, Jan. 31," said Ridgewood coach Kent Reed. "A lot of girls attempted weight they knew they had to lift to be successful at the next level. Liz Clum (169) was asked to do a little more than she normally does."
MITCHELL'S SEYMOUR TAKES THIRD: Mitchell High's Ciara Seymour was third in the 183-pound class. The senior had lifts of 110 pounds in both the bench press and the clean and jerk.
The performance was fine with Seymour.
"Good, very good, actually," Seymour said. "I thought I could do a little more, but I wanted to be safe so I could get my total."
Seymour is also a pitcher and infielder on the Mitchell softball team.
"I lift to try to get in shape and get stronger," Seymour said. "It helps hitting a lot.
"I love lifting. The coach Reginia Dixon makes it fun. My friends make it a lot of fun. I have a good time."
Mitchell didn't win any weight classes, but Dixon wasn't disappointed.
"I think they did OK," Dixon said. "We need to work a little more on our last lifts."
