CLEARWATER - Clearwater police are investigating whether carbon monoxide from a gas stove killed an 83-year-old man.
Robert Suiters died Sunday morning at his home, 1431 Pine St.
Suiters' son went to his father's home to pick him up for church, public safety spokeswoman Elizabeth Watts said. When he entered the home, he smelled strong gas fumes and found his father unresponsive.
The son turned off a gas burner on the stove and called 911; Clearwater Fire and Rescue pronounced Suiters dead.
Suiters' son told investigators it wasn't uncommon for his father to use his gas stove to heat his home.
Watts said using a gas range or oven for heating can build up carbon monoxide in a home, which can cause sudden illness and death.
Detectives are awaiting autopsy and toxicology results. The investigation continues.
