TAMPA - Repairs are expected to begin today on the southbound lanes of the 56th Street bridge, which has been closed since Thursday after workers replacing a handrail noticed the road and four of the bridge's beams had separated by an inch or two.
State Department of Transportation officials estimated that at least one lane will be opened by midweek and both by Friday morning, spokeswoman Kris Carson said today. Truck traffic may still be restricted as the repairs continue.
Carson said most of the repairs will be performed after the lanes are opened to traffic and that lane or bridge closures may be needed at night. Repairs are expected to be complete Feb. 23.
Until the southbound lanes are re-opened, traffic is being rerouted to Busch Boulevard and 40th Street.
The bridge spans the Hillsborough River just south of Busch Boulevard.
