TAMPA - Hillsborough County leaders pushing to get a slice of President Barack Obama's economic stimulus money have submitted a $436.5 million list of "ready to go" road, bridge and water projects.
The projects include widening major thoroughfares, such as Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, and major structural repairs to the Columbus Drive and Platt Street and Friendship Trail bridges. Also in the mix are software systems to run traffic signals, roadway lighting, sidewalk construction and restoration, and more than $66 million in water and sewer improvements.
Hillsborough officials say the projects are ready to be advertised for bids. That means that right-of-way has been acquired for transportation projects, design is complete or nearly complete, and that permits have been obtained or will be in place by the time the funding is available.
The list was given to the county's congressional delegation: U.S. Reps. Gus Bilirakis, R-Palm Harbor; Kathy Castor, D-Tampa; and Adam Putnam, R-Bartow, along with the state's U.S. senators, Bill Nelson and Mel Martinez.
