TEMPLE TERRACE - The 56th Street bridge is open to northbound and southbound traffic.
The Florida Department of Transportation reopened the southbound lanes on the bridge about 6:30 p.m. today, authorities said.
Bridge repairs will continue for the next month or so, mostly during overnight hours, FDOT spokeswoman Kris Carson said.
"The most critical elements have been corrected," Carson said.
State officials shut down the southbound lanes of the bridge Thursday to conduct an emergency inspection after a maintenance crew discovered possible structural problems on the 55-year-old structure.
Workers were replacing a handrail when they noticed the road and four of the bridge's beams had separated by an inch or two, possibly because of recent changes in temperature.
Traffic was re-routed to Busch Boulevard and 40th Street. Some residents in the Temple Crest area complained motorists also clogged River Hills Drive between 56th Street and 40th Street.
