Armwood senior linebacker Petey Smith has verbally committed to Alabama, he confirmed Tuesday.
Smith made his decision following an in-home visit Tuesday evening from Alabama coach Nick Saban. Smith chose the Crimson Tide over their biggest rival, Auburn, which was Smith's other finalist from among more than 40 Division I scholarship offers.
Smith was a four-year starter at linebacker for the Hawks and finished his prep career as the program's leading tackler. He was a Tribune All-Hillsborough County first team selection in each of the last three seasons.
Smith's decision to attend Alabama means he will line up opposite of his older brother Eric Smith in the Iron Bowl, the annual game that pits the Crimson Tide against Auburn. Eric, a former Hawks standout running back, recently completed his freshman season with the Tigers.
Smith, ranked as the nation's 32nd-best inside linebacker prospect by Rivals.com, becomes the eighth member of what on Feb. 4 likely will be the largest National Signing Day class in Armwood program history. The Hawks other commitments thus far are defensive lineman Ryne Giddins (USF), safety Angelo Hadley (North Carolina), quarterback Mywan Jackson (North Carolina), offensive lineman Justin Cabbagestalk (Vanderbilt), linebacker Casey Callahan (Stony Brook), fullback Matt Eastman (Elon) and running back Sirchauncey Holloway (Liberty).
