TAMPA - Police have charged a Brandon man with felony DUI manslaughter, saying he struck and killed a man crossing North 15th Street late Monday.
Eric Dwayne Wilkerson, 38, was held without bail at Orient Road Jail today, records show.
Tampa police have not identified the pedestrian. The pedestrian was carried by Wilkerson's black Cadillac for about 150 feet before he fell to the ground, a preliminary police report states.
According to police, Wilkerson was northbound on North 15th Street about 11:55 p.m. Monday when he struck the man near East 15th Avenue.
An affidavit states that Wilkerson told officers who responded to the scene, "I just killed a man. I was driving north, and he got in front of me."
Officers noticed the area was well-lit and that there was an odor of alcoholic beverages on Wilkerson's breath, the affidavit states. Wilkerson's eyes appeared bloodshot and glassy, the affidavit states.
Wilkerson refused to perform field sobriety tests, but a blood test determined his blood-alcohol level at .10, records show. In Florida, a driver is considered intoxicated at .08 or above.
