Irene Maher, well-known former health reporter for News Channel 8, is returning to television.

She will host a TV version of "Florida Matters," a public affairs radio program on WUSF, 89.7 FM.

A TV version will be carried on one of the new digital channels of WUSF, Channel 16.

Maher, 52, was laid off in July after 23 years at WFLA. She was let go as part of reduction in the work force.

She will be joined on "Florida Matters" by independent producer Larry Elliston, a former WTVT, Channel 13, reporter who has produced several award-winning documentaries.

"Florida Matters" debuts on Friday at 8 p.m. on WUSF TV/DT. It will be rebroadcast Sunday at 9:30 a.m. The radio show will continue to air on WUSF radio Friday evenings at 6 p.m. and Sunday mornings at 10.

" 'Florida Matters' has proven to be popular with our radio audience, which lead to the development of a TV series," said JoAnn Urofsky, general manager for WUSF Public Broadcasting. "The goal is to engage people in our community across all platforms – TV, radio and the Internet."
