Pfizer Buying Wyeth
No. 1 drugmaker Pfizer said Monday it is buying No. 12 Wyeth for $68 billion in a deal that will wipe out nearly 20,000 jobs but boost Pfizer's revenue and profit.
New York-based Pfizer will mutate from a maker of blockbuster pills to a one-stop shop for vaccines, biotech drugs, traditional pills and nonprescription products for people and animals.
In The McGreen
McDonald's Corp. reported strong same-store sales in its fourth quarter, helping boost the company's profit above Wall Street's estimates. The Oak Brook, Ill.-based chain said its net income for the quarter ended Dec. 31 fell to $985.3 million, or 87 cents per share, beating analyst estimates from Thomson Reuters by 4 cents per share.
Netflix's Earnings Up
Netflix says its fourth-quarter earnings jumped 45 percent and surpassed analysts' estimates. The recession is making Netflix's online DVD rental service more enticing to budget-conscious consumers looking for home entertainment.
The California-based company ended 2008 with 9.4 million subscribers, a gain of 718,000 customers from the end of September, according to data released Monday.
Pay The Dog
A federal appeals court has ordered Taco Bell Corp. to pay the creators of the fast-food chain's popular Chihuahua sales mascot $42 million.
A Michigan jury in 2003 found that Irvine-based Taco Bell didn't properly pay the dog's creators when it launched its $500 million advertising blitz in the 1990s that popularized the phrase "!Yo quiero Taco Bell!" After the verdict, Taco Bell blamed advertising agency TBWA Chiat/Day for stiffing the dog's creators. Taco Bell sued the ad agency over responsibility for the $42 million judgment.
