A 17-year-old boy collapsed while playing basketball at a Polk County juvenile detention facility and later died, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.
According to the sheriff's office, John W. Kingcade of Ocala collapsed at the Avon Park Youth Academy Juvenile Detention Facility at about 8:45 p.m. Monday. Kingcade had been playing for about 20 minutes before he collapsed, the sheriff's office said.
Detention workers performed CPR until an ambulance arrived. Kingcade was taken to Florida Hospital in Sebring, where he was pronounced dead.
The teenager's mother said her son had been hospitalized in the past for a similar incident. He had been at the detention facility for about 13 months, after he was convicted of cocaine trafficking.
Autopsy results have not yet been received, but the sheriff's office said it does not suspect foul play.
