TAMPA - Hillsborough County Animal Control officers have seized 156 rabbits, an adult cat and three kittens from a Tampa residence that had fallen into a deplorable and unsanitary state, authorities say.
Veterinarians are checking the animals for medical issues, Animal Services spokeswoman Marti Ryan said. It appears that two animals may have to be euthanized and the others will be rehabilitated, she said.
Acting on an anonymous tip, animal control officers inspected the home at 10207 Connechusett Road today and found the animals on the property.
Animal cruelty charges against the homeowner, Peter Bordwell, 68, are pending, Ryan said.
Once the animals are rehabilitated, they will be available for adoption through partners and agencies outside of the county's shelter, Ryan said.
