ST. PETERSBURG - St. Petersburg robbery detectives are looking for an "oversized" bandit they say robbed a Wachovia bank branch shortly after noon Tuesday.
The suspect is described as a white male about 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weighing 250 pounds. He is in mid-50s with a cleft chin.
He wore a wig of straight black hair. His clothing was black, and he was carrying a dark-colored backpack, St. Petersburg police spokesman George Kajtsa said. After the robbery, he took off in a silver, four-door compact vehicle with tinted windows that may be missing a right-front hubcap.
The robbery occurred at 1000 Tyrone Blvd. N. at 12:47 p.m., Kajtsa said.
Before the robbery, the suspect sat in his car for about 20 minutes, the spokesman said. He walked into the bank, implied to a teller he had a gun and then asked for money, Kajtsa said. The thief also asked that the teller not include a dye pack with the cash.
Anyone with information is asked to call the department's Robbery Squad at (727) 893-7164.
