TAMPA - The city's fire department will be able to boost its ranks, thanks to a $4 million federal grant.
The money will come from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's SAFER grants, or Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response.
"Homeland security is really hometown security," U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa, said in a prepared statement. "We count on our first responders to keep us safe."
The grant can be used to hire firefighters or to recruit and retain volunteer firefighters.
Castor said Tampa Fire Rescue needs to hire and train more firefighters to be ready in case of natural disasters, terrorism or other catastrophes and reduce response times. Budget cuts have prevented the department from hiring more trained personnel, she said.
"This boost to Tampa Fire Rescue will help ensure we have enough first responders," Castor said. "We must do everything we can to be ready for any disaster."
