'There Are No Bad Days,' Speaker Tells Chamber

NEW PORT RICHEY - People get so busy rushing from one place to another they tend to become "human doings" instead of "human beings," Royce M. Decker said at the Business Development Week kickoff luncheon Monday.

"We're all in this together," Decker told a crowd of several hundred people at the event. Decker is a Hernando County Sheriff's Office major, a motivational speaker and an associate professor with Saint Leo University, the University of Phoenix and the St. Petersburg Junior College's Southeastern Public Safety Institute. He has led numerous leadership seminars and management training for the FBI, Florida Sheriff's Association and many other agencies.

The West Pasco Chamber of Commerce organizes the annual business week festivities.

We need to take more time to encourage each other, Decker said. "There are no bad days. You just make it that way."

Decker wonders why it is that classified ads for job openings usually describe the minimum qualifications of the position.

"You have to be alive," Decker joked. "You need an alarm clock."

The result of minimal job requirements all too often is minimally qualified job candidates, Decker said. It makes more sense to describe the maximum qualifications, Decker said.

"Why can't we hire for passion?" Decker asked.

People also tend to get angry when their routines get disrupted, Decker said. "We've lost the art of showing concern for our fellow human beings," including co-workers, he said.

Business Development Week continues today with the Success Stories Breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m., part of the Seven Springs Rotary Club meeting at Seven Springs Golf and Country Club, 3535 Trophy Blvd., New Port Richey. Speakers will be Jeff Wright from Weights Nutrients, Paul Mancini from Mancini Automotive and Rhonda Koning from Contractor's Institute.

Later, from noon to 1:30 p.m., a luncheon will focus on "Successful Business Women of Tampa Bay" at the Pasco-Hernando Community College Conference Center. Speakers will be Michele Baker, Pasco County chief assistant county administrator; Meredith Zdon, chief operating officer for Power Design Inc.; and Deborah Shuck, president of Manor Steel Fabricators.

On Friday, Mark Vitner of Wachovia will talk during a Pasco Economic Development Council lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Tampa Bay Golf and Country Club in San Antonio.

Business Development Week will close with the Business Expo from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Gulf View Square mall, 9409 U.S. 19, Port Richey.
