Grajales Invited To Elite Tourney
Brandon's Eric Grajales is headed to the nation's most prestigious high school wrestling event.
Cesar Grajales, Eric's father, confirmed Wednesday the Eagles' senior standout has accepted an invitation to compete at the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic, which is billed as the "Rose Bowl of Wrestling." The 35th annual event will be held March 15 at the Fitzgerald Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.
Grajales will wrestle at 140 pounds for the USA All-Stars, a collection of the nation's top high school senior wrestlers. The USA All-Stars will compete against the Pennsylvania All-Stars in the event's premier match. The Western Pennsylvania (WPIAL) All-Stars will face the West Virginia All-Stars in the event's other match.
Grajales is the fifth Hillsborough County wrestler to be selected for the USA All-Stars.
ALL-STATE: Gulf junior RB Adrian Golden and Pasco senior teammates WR/DB Josh Johnson and DL Mark Christmas were named Wednesday to Florida's Class 3A All-State first team.
Johnson and Christmas were two of six Pirates honored. Senior LB Tim Saylor was a second-team selection, senior RB Jamall Haynes and senior DL Jarrod Carmody each were third-team selections, and junior PK Brennan Allen earned an honorable-mention selection.
Jesuit senior teammates TE John Plasencia and WR Erick McGriff each were second-team picks, while Hudson junior QB Zack Wynn, Spoto sophomore LB Rodney Williams and Gulf junior QB Madison Burr were honorable-mention selections.
SEFFNER CHRISTIAN STARTING FOOTBALL: Seffner Christian announced Wednesday it will implement 11-man tackle football and winter boys soccer, and will survey students to determine interest in a golf program.
Athletic Director Andy Holmes said the school will try to have a football team in place for the 2010 season and likely will play an independent schedule.
Former Temple Heights Christian coach Steve Lewis will be the program's coach. Lewis said the team will practice on the school's soccer field, but it might have to play home games at another stadium until a home field is constructed.
PYRON COMMITS: Chamberlain senior DL Dontavious Pyron, a three-star recruit, committed to Troy on Wednesday night, Chamberlain assistant Brian Turner said.
Pyron, a 6-foot-2, 260 pound lineman, was a 2008 Tribune All-Hillsborough County first-team selection and had 68 tackles and three sacks to help the Chiefs reach the Class 5A region final this season.
