ST. PETERSBURG - Five Pinellas County sheriff's employees have been disciplined for sloppy or unprofessional work, such as leaving their post early to watch sporting events, calling in sick too often and using unprofessional language with civilians, according to documents released this morning.
One employee, who works for the flight section, failed to keep his pilot's license current.
• Sgt. Robert Haimes was demoted to the rank of deputy and suspended for 80 hours after he left work early seven times. On two of the occasions, he left early to go to a relative's house to watch a sporting event. During one ballgame, he left his subordinates unsupervised for one hour and 20 minutes; during the other they went unsupervised for 3.5 hours.
• Deputy Ronald Martin received a 56-hour suspension after he failed to return to duty from previously scheduled time off.
• Deputy Charles Reiter received an eight-hour suspension after he used "unprofessional language" with a tow truck operator about to tow Reiter's motorcycle.
• Deputy Gregg Luescher was fired for repeatedly abusing sick time.
• Sgt. Charles Tarrou was suspended for 40 hours after it was discovered he failed to keep his Federal Aviation Administration medical certificate current, which caused his commercial pilot's license to be downgraded to a private pilot's license.
Tarrou continued to fly agency aircraft even though his certification was not current. He has been transferred to a position in patrol, Pinellas sheriff's Sgt. Jim Bordner said.
