LAND O' LAKES - Former Pasco High and current Florida Southern baseball player Robbie Shields was named Baseball America's Division II Player of the Year in their college preview.
Shields, who is entering his junior season with the Mocs, was also named a top prospect for the 2009 MLB draft.
Last season, the shortstop/second baseman hit .348 with nine home runs and 36 RBIs. Of his 69 hits, 15 were doubles. Defensively, Shields collected 178 assists and 85 putouts.
Shields has garnered plenty of recognition during his time in the Cape Cod League in Massachusetts. During his 2008 stint with the Cotuit Kettleers, he started hot, posting a .429 batting average, good enough for second-best in the league, through 10 games before sustaining a wrist and thumb injury.
STANDOUT ATHLETES: Former Mitchell standout Spencer Brown and former Wesley Chapel star Nigel Bryant were named to the Patriot League Football academic honor roll.
They were two of the 18 athletes from Lafayette College selected to the team after they posted GPAs of 3.20 or better.
This season, Bryant, a senior Leopards defensive back, collected 34 tackles, two pass breakups, one sack, a forced fumble and an interception. In nine games, Brown, a junior outside linebacker, collected 13 tackles.
