State education leaders are urging students to celebrate Black History Month by opening a book.
The Florida Department of Education released its suggested reading list, which showcases a selection of African-American authors. Black History Month begins Sunday.
Among some of the books on the list are: "This Life" by Sidney Poitier; "Twelve Rounds to Glory: The Story of Muhammad Ali" by Charles R. Smith, Jr.; and "I Am Rosa Parks" by Rosa Parks and James Haskins.
The list features books for all ages and reading levels.
"Reading is the basis of learning and serves as a continuing source of discovery throughout our lives," Department of Education Commissioner Eric J. Smith said in a statement. "This year's Black History Month reading list contains many inspirational selections that are sure to captivate readers of all ages."
The complete list can be found here . Parents can also go to the Web site for tips on how to encourage children to spend more time reading. Tips include encouraging younger children to read signs around their neighborhood, reading food labels at home, and setting time aside when the whole family reads books.
In addition to the reading list, the state is holding an art contest for students in kindergarten through third grade and an essay contest for students in grades four through 12in celebration of Black History Month.
Plus, parents, teachers and principals are encouraged to nominate African-American educators in elementary, middle and high schools for the Black History Month Excellence in Education Award.
