Hudson Knocks Off Bishop Moore

Published: January 30, 2009

HUDSON - It didn't seem probable that Hudson would be able to score on, let alone beat, Orlando Bishop Moore after 40 minutes of play.

What a difference halftime makes for a team that refuses to quit.

The Cobras (21-2-1), trailing 2-0 after mustering only two shots in the first half, had three goals in the second half to force overtime, then got the game-winner from senior Lindsay Zullo off a deflection in the 83rd minute to beat the Hornets 4-3 in the Class 4A-Region 2 quarterfinals.

"In the locker room at halftime, we kind of established that we had absolutely nothing to lose," said Zullo, who had two goals to give her 27 for the year. "We were determined. We were real motivated."

Hudson's comeback started with a goal by Katy McGee, assisted by Karlie Lamphier with 19:34 left in regulation. Meanwhile, junior keeper Jessie Imbimbo kept the Cobras in the game with 12 saves, including spectacular back-to-back stops with the game tied at 2 in the second.
Bishop Moore (16-7-4) led 3-2 with 4:40 left on a nice long-range goal by Megan Young, but less than a minute later, on the very next possession, Hudson tied the game on an unassisted goal by Alicia Schuering.

With their first-ever regional playoff win in hand, Hudson will face Eustis (19-4-1) on Tuesday at Cobra Stadium.

Eustis Rips Zephyrhills, 8-0

EUSTIS - Zephyrhills coach Michael Mira didn't have a good feeling Thursday night about the Bulldogs' Class 4A-Region 2 quarterfinal match against Eustis.

The Bulldogs (16-8-1) were missing starting sweeper Carly Patton and two other players had been battling the flu. But even a healthy roster wouldn't have been enough. Eustis (19-4-1) scored early and often as the Panthers ended Zephyrhills' season with an 8-0 win in a game called by mercy rule after 40 minutes.

"They were faster and more skilled than we are," Mira said. "I just told the girls they probably just lost to the state champions. They are an outstanding soccer team."

It only took the Panthers three minutes to score their first of seven goals (Zephyrhills knocked an eighth one into its own net) and by the mandatory water break after 20 minutes, Eustis had a 5-0 lead.

"We missed Carly, but it probably wouldn't have made a big difference," said Mira.

Patton was traveling to Belgium to compete in an international judo tournament.

Tampa Prep Advances, 5-0

TAMPA - In Friday's district final win against Bishop McLaughlin, Tampa Prep senior midfielder Taylor Richardson rolled her right ankle and has spent a week nervously hoping she would remember to avoid striking from the right. Terrapins coach Pam Smith was nervous before Thursday's Class 2A-Region 3 quarterfinal against Shorecrest Prep that her senior field general would be slowed, or even have to come off the pitch in the wet conditions.

Those concerns were short-lived as Richardson notched her second hat trick of the season, and the Terps got two goals from Colby Maffei to beat the Chargers 5-0.

Maffei scored the deciding goal in the fourth minute, and Richardson scored the next three in the victory.

"She is the quarterback, she is the general," Smith said of Richardson. "And you know what? She has a bum right ankle and I tell her to shoot with the left and she does it."

"It's a natural thing for me," Richardson said of being a leader. "I feel like if I'm talking with my teammates, it's easier to trust them, and I trust every other person on this field."

Indian Rocks Tops McLaughlin

LARGO - Indian Rocks Christian beat Bishop McLaughlin 4-3 in a Class 2A-Region 3 girls soccer quarterfinal Thursday night.

Bishop McLaughlin's Spencer Valdespino scored one goal early in the first half, but was quickly outscored by four consecutive goals from Indian Rock's formidable offense. Jensen Eifert scored Indian Rocks' first two goals, followed by goals by Victoria Raissi and Madeline Voitier for a first-half score of 4-1.

Bishop McLaughlin got second-half goals by Valdespino and Alex Muscolina to get within one, but Indian Rocks finished off the victory.

Berkeley Prep Romps, 7-1

TAMPA - Berkeley Prep needed less than three minutes to score its first goal and less than a half to book its place in the Class 3A-Region 3 semifinals with a 7-1 victory Thursday against Sarasota Cardinal Mooney (9-9-1).

The Buccaneers (18-3-2) received a pair of goals each from Samantha Newhaller and Whitney Hang, and another from Taylor Richardson in taking a commanding 5-1 halftime lead. Hang would finish with a hat trick, while Richardson added another goal in the second half to push her season total to 27 and help send Berkeley Prep back to the region semifinals, where it lost last season to Clearwater Central Catholic.

"I was very pleased with the way we moved the ball in the first half," said Berkeley Prep coach Ken Roberts. "We put a lot of pressure on them to defend. For anyone to have to play us, who are they going to mark? That's the one thing we have over the team that went to the final four."

St. Pete Catholic Triumphs, 4-2

FORT MYERS - The scoreboard doesn't always tell the whole story.

Case in point - the first half of Thursday's Class 3A-Region 3 girls soccer quarterfinal between Fort Myers Bishop Verot and St. Petersburg Catholic.

The Vikings (12-6-1) led 1-0 at intermission despite being outshot 10-3 by a Barons squad that controlled much of the opening 40 minutes.

"I looked over at their huddle and the coaches weren't in it," said Bishop Verot coach Randy Zavada. "They've got eight seniors and seven juniors, and they were motivating themselves. I told our girls they had to keep their intensity up."

St. Petersburg Catholic exploded out of the intermission, scoring four unanswered goals on its first six shots of the second half to earn a 4-2 victory against the Vikings.

"They came out pumped up and they took it to us," Zavada said.

Just 30 seconds after intermission, St. Petersburg Catholic (14-4-3) knotted the game at 1 when junior Kelsey Dougherty-Howard tapped in a rebound.

Two minutes later, junior Hillary Ziegler scored the winner.
