DELAND - Students at a central Florida high school sit in the gym when their teachers are absent because there's no money to pay substitute teachers.
DeLand High School Principal Mitch Moyer calls the gym "a holding tank."
The school district cut funding for substitute teachers. As a result, Moyer can only afford to hire three substitutes a day. On a typical day, 12 to 15 teachers might be out.
The gym has no heating or air conditioning. Students are told to sit on the bleachers during the 50-minute period.
School Board member Candace Lankford says it's "a necessity that cannot be justified for any reason except to save money."
