When a Manatee County orange grove owner heard one of his employees had been shot in the chest by a stray bullet, he did the responsible boss thing and called the sheriff's office.
By the time Manatee County deputies arrived at the grove, shortly before 4 p.m., there were no witnesses, and the man, Sildino Lopez-Ramirez, 39, had been taken to Desoto Memorial Hospital.
According to a media release, when medical personnel examined the man, they found no bullet, however.
Deputies were told that the wound appeared superficial and did not appear to have been caused by a bullet.
Lopez told deputies that he heard gunshots just before he felt the injury and then saw the blood. He thought he had been shot, but he did not know if it was the actual cause of the injury. Lopez was treated and released.
The grove and the surrounding area was searched, and there were no signs that anyone had been shooting firearms.
