Respect your neighbors

The fireworks tents are open, so it is a good time to remind citizens that exploding fireworks are illegal, under state Statute 791, when discharged in residential neighborhoods.

The use of fireworks within a neighborhood is a first-degree misdemeanor, subject up to a $1,000 fine and a year in jail.

Signing a form stating you will use them for a legal purpose does not make them legal for use within any residential neighborhood. Fireworks are dangerous (over 9,000 serious injuries every year, per the National Fire Prevention Association). In addition, fireworks cause over 20,000 fires each year.

When fireworks are being discharged in your neighborhood, you should call the Tampa Police Department non-emergency number and provide them with the address where illegal fireworks are being used.

Also, the city of Tampa has amended the vendors' zoning code and now requires all "temporary" vendors, including those selling fireworks, to cease their sales at 9 p.m. The Tampa Police Department is aware of these new restrictions.

Let's make this a safe and sound July 4th. Enjoy our national holiday, and please respect your neighbors.
