TAMPA, FL –On Friday June 12th a phone call became a parents worst nightmare when BG Holmberg, a Realtor at Smith & Associates received the call that his son was hit by a car while riding his bike to go teach sailing lessons at the Davis Islands Yacht Club. Holmberg's son Kevin had just started his summer vacation and instead of spending his afternoons sailing he has been at Tampa General recovering from his injuries.

This tragedy sparked one of Kevin Holmberg's Plant High classmates Maren Douglas to take action and start a 501c Non-profit Organization named Helmets for Kevin. This organization was started to raise awareness about helmet safety and to also collect helmets to donate to people who are unable to get them. Holmberg's injuries were made worse by the fact that he was not wearing a helmet the day of the accident.

Helmets for Kevin is collecting Helmets and they have several drop off locations including Smith & Associates Real Estate located at 3801 Bay to Bay Blvd in Tampa. While family and friends continue to hold a vigil at Kevin's bedside they knew they wanted to do more, not only Kevin but other injured children and adults in the Bay area.

The Holmbergs also decided to set up a Blood drive to honor Kevin along with a Helmet drive for Helmets for Kevin. The Blood & Helmet drive is set to take place at the Tampa office of Smith & Associates Real Estate located at 3801 Bay to Bay Blvd on Friday July 10th 2009 from 10am-6pm.

We encourage the community to come out and give blood and/or bring a new helmet to donate to Helmets for Kevin.
