Sickles High baseball player Josh Dunn has opted to bypass college and turn professional.

TC's Rowland chosen to play in Aflac Classic

Tampa Catholic rising senior Shane Rowland has been selected to play in the 2009 Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic.

The prestigious national all-star event, which features 40 of the nation's top rising senior baseball players, will be played Aug. 16 at Petco Park in San Diego.

This is the fourth consecutive year a Hillsborough County baseball player has been selected for the event. Rowland joins former Hillsborough outfielder Michael Burgess (2006), former Riverview pitcher Anthony Ferrara (2007) and former Plant infielder/pitcher Mychal Givens (2008). Lakeland rising senior/infielder Yordy Cabrera also was selected to play in the 2009 game.

Rowland, a catcher, hit .370 with seven doubles, five home runs and 28 RBIs for the Crusaders in 2009 and was a Tribune All-Hillsborough County honorable-mention selection.

Neal was Hillsborough County's top performer in the 400-meter run, clocking 49.14 seconds at the Class 3A state finals. Neal was also part of the Hawks' 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams that finished fourth and sixth, respectively, at state finals.

Godsey, David take over basketball programs

Land O' Lakes hired former Washington Generals player Robert Godsey as its girls basketball coach, while Bishop McLaughlin hired Greg David as its boys basketball coach.

Godsey has served as an assistant basketball coach at Indiana University-South Bend as well as Baker University in Baldwin, Kan., Columbia University in Missouri, and the University of Nebraska at Kearney. David left the same position at Spring Hill's Notre Dame Catholic School after guiding the team to a first-place division finish last season.

David takes over for Greg O'Connell, who resigned Jan. 2. O'Connell led the Hurricanes to a 10-13 record in 2007-08 and had the team at 10-1 this past season before resigning. New York Mets scout Les Parker, a former basketball coach, took over the program and finished out the season.
