Fire your diet, fix your health

Society has been fixated on dieting for decades.

As a former overweight child and adult, I have tried every diet known to man. I became a lifetime member of Weight Watchers when I was just 13 years old!

Recently, I met master health coach, nutritionist and exercise physiologist Joe Kasper, who gave me an earful about his feelings on diets. He is the author of the book, "Fire Your Diet: 17 Simple Ways to Stay Out of the Doctor's Office" (More Heart Than Talent Publishing, $24.95) and creator of the "Fire Your Diet Food Pyramid," which emphasizes plenty of fresh vegetables and offers simple steps that most people can follow on a daily basis. His pyramid also has sections on fruit, water and exercise.

According to Kasper, diet stands for: D - depression, I - insecurity, E - emotional, T - trauma.

"The human body craves high levels of nutrients, and by following the standard American diet, you have no chance to be healthy," Kasper says.

Why is he so passionate about a healthy diet? His father had a heart attack at age 50, a stroke at age 59, and he passed away at 64. Kasper is convinced his father's early death was preventable.

"My dad's eating habits were terrible!" he says. "Never did any nutritionist teach him about healthy eating habits. Why? Because they only taught him what they learned in school, which was the Government Food Pyramid of processed food.

"I remember him eating low-fat cheese, diet bread, low-sugar/chemical cookies that are all manmade and have no nutritional value. This is one reason why he took drugs to lower his blood pressure, balance his blood sugar, treat his elevated cholesterol and heart condition," Kasper says.

My own father had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoked cigarettes, ate a poor diet and didn't exercise. He died at 49. He was a cardiologist! That's another death that was totally preventable.
