HUDSON - Throughout her life, Marcia Hanshaw's motto has always been: "Treat others as you would like to be treated." Hanshaw's treatment of patients at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point has earned her the title Nurse of the Year at the hospital.
With 11 years' experience as a nurse, Hanshaw works in the surgical intensive care unit of Regional Medical Center, where she also received the Employee Excellence Award for the First Quarter 2009.
"I was very humbled by these awards. I see it as an award for all the nurses in my unit," she said.
This Florida native and Brooksville resident has numerous family members in the medical field and has always felt inspired to pursue this line of work.
"In nursing, you take care of people and learn about the human body," she said. "I love it. I know I picked the right profession."
Hanshaw earned a nursing diploma from Georgia Baptist School of Nursing in Atlanta. She also has worked at Mease Dunedin and Mease Countryside hospitals.
At Regional Medical Center, she cares for patients with brain traumas, those undergoing brain and other surgeries.
She also displays caring skills outside the operating room. last October, her trip to work turned into the chance to help a child.
"I was driving through Spring Hill on my way to work at 6:40 in the morning, when I saw a little boy on the side of the road by himself," said Hanshaw.
She called police, then waited with the boy until they arrived. "I did the same thing anyone else would have done," she said.
"I enjoy taking care of people," she said, "of making differences in their lives."
Kurt Conover, director of business development for Regional Medical Center, says Hanshaw makes a difference.
"She is proactive and will find ways to meet customer's needs before a patient becomes dissatisfied," he said. "She has the respect of many physicians and peers. She has a wealth of knowledge and has made some very good suggestions to improve quality processes within the department. She facilitates team collaboration. She works well with ancillary departments. She shares feedback on how we could better function as a team. She comes to work with a positive attitude. When we have a busy day, she never lets patient care and customer service lack. She actively pursues personal and career development. Nursing is definitely a 'calling' for her."
