A 12-year-old Tampa boy has been charged with murder in Marietta, Ga., accused of killing his 5-week-old cousin.
According to the Cobb County (Ga.) Police Department, the mother of the 5-week-old baby girl left the baby and the 12-year-old in the car on Saturday afternoon while she went inside a Target store. When she came outside, the baby wasn't moving.
When officers arrived, the baby was not breathing.
The infant was taken to the nearest hospital and later transferred to another hospital. The girl was taken off life support and died at 6 p.m. Sunday.
The Cobb County Medical Examiners Office conducted an autopsy on Monday and concluded the baby died from "blunt force trauma'' to the head. Today, the Crimes Against Children Unit charged the 12-year-old boy with felony murder and cruelty to children.
Cobb County police had not released additional details late Tuesday, including the name of the boy or the baby. A public information officer said it was unknown why or for how long the 12-year-old had been in Marietta.
