TAMPA - Nearly 4,000 poll workers will undergo an intensive training course at the Phyllis Busansky Clerks Academy prior to next year's elections.
The academy, named for the late supervisor of elections, fulfills a promise Busansky made during her campaign last year. Busansky died June 23.
"Phyllis believed that the election poll workers managed a 'gateway to democracy,'" Craig Latimer, chief of staff at the elections office, said in a news release. "The best way to honor her vision for exceptional elections is to turn it into reality."
The academy will be a 10- to 12-hour course that covers elections law; voting machines; policies and procedures; voter registration and eligibility; customer service; and emergency management.
Clerks and assistant clerks with previous experience, as well as new recruits, can get a preview of the program at 6 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Robert L. Gilder Elections Center, 2514 Falkenburg Road in Brandon.
Anyone interested in becoming a clerk, assistant clerk or poll worker should call the supervisor's office at (813) 744-5855, or send an e-mail with contact information to busansky academy@hcsoe.org.
