TAMPA - Take that, Santa Ana.
And beware, St. Louis.
Tampa has leapfrogged the California city to earn the title of 53rd largest in the United States.
Tampa's new population estimate of 340,882 is just above Santa Ana's of 339,130. Tampa experienced a growth of 5,404 residents from 2007 to 2008, while Santa Ana gained only 1,863 people, so the two switched spots in the big-city pecking order.
The figures are based on recently released census population estimates of July 1, 2008, according to a news release from the city. Tampa's population is estimated to have increased by 37,418 people, or 12.3 percent, since the 2000 census.
Just ahead of Tampa at No. 52 is St. Louis.
