About 30 residents of a Winter Haven nursing home were evacuated this afternoon because of a fire, according to Polk County public safety officials.
The Winter Haven Fire Department arrived at Winter Haven Manor, 140 Avenue A SW, at 1:34 p.m. and found fire on the second floor, according to city spokeswoman Donna Sheehan. A woman was signaling for assistance, and ladder trucks were able to get her out safely through a window. She was not injured, a report says.
The facility was completely evacuated, with the residents were taken to the First Baptist Church of Winter Haven, said public safety spokeswoman Heather Smith.
The fire was contained to the second floor, with two rooms sustaining damage, Sheehan said. The structure will be assessed to determine when residents can safely re-enter.
The Winter Haven Fire Department received aid from the cities of Auburndale, Bartow, Dundee and Haines City, and Polk County during the incident, with 81 fire and EMS personnel responding, Sheehan said. The American Red Cross is offering assistance to the displaced residents.
