ST. PETERSBURG - A marine science teacher at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus is one of 100 science, math and engineering teachers nationwide to receive a Presidential Award of Excellence.
The award went to Ashanti Johnson Pyrtle, an assistant professor of chemical oceanography. She specializes in study of radioactive chemicals in water bodies and analyzing those chemicals to interpret past events that affect the water bodies.
Pyrtle is also director of a mentoring program that seeks to help minority students advance to careers in earth sciences.
The awards, which carry a $10,000 cash prize and an invitation to a ceremony at the White House, are given for teaching and mentoring in the fields of math, science and engineering.
