Investigators will try to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a double-wide mobile home this afternoon at Doral Village on U.S. 19 in Dunedin.
No injuries were reported, although firefighters had to contend with oppressive heat and exploding ammunition from within the home, according to the Dunedin Fire Department. Damage was a total loss estimated at $30,000.
Firefighters responded a little after 4:30 pm. to the fire that sent smoke billowing into the air, visible a mile away. The owner of the home told investigators he was at a store at the time of the fire, and returned to find his home in flames.
The fire was quickly brought under control and confined to the one home, doing only superficial damage to adjacent mobile homes, the fire department said.
The Dunedin Fire Prevention Bureau will be investigating the fire in conjunction with Pinellas County sheriff's arson detectives. Dunedin firefighters were on the scene with four units. They were assisted by units from Clearwater and Palm Harbor.
The Red Cross is expected to find temporary shelter for the occupant.
