Veterans eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill can attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at little or no cost under a program scheduled to begin for the 2009-10 academic year, school officials said.
The private, not-for-profit university has campuses in Daytona Beach and Prescott, Ariz., with annual tuition of about $26,000 to $28,000. There are more than 30 undergraduate and graduate programs ranging from business to aeronautical science-professional pilot.
A tuition package scheduled to take effect Aug. 1 includes a combination of benefits under the new GI Bill and "Yellow Ribbon" scholarships.
Private universities like Embry-Riddle can provide the scholarships to offset additional costs to attend institutions that do not rely on state funding.
The university will provide 50 percent of any tuition and fee charges not covered by the GI Bill; the Veterans Administration will pay the other half.
"From the perspective of the veteran, prior to the new program they were basically limited in their choice of schools that would be covered by their veterans' benefits," said Pam Small, spokeswoman for Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach.
"Now they can attend Embry-Riddle, with programs they might previously have thought were out of their reach," she said.
Embry-Riddle has more than 7,400 service members, veterans and dependents who receive veterans' education benefits. The system includes 6,500 students at its Florida and Arizona campuses and 27,000 others taking courses through Embry-Riddle's worldwide campus study program.
