The tragic death of a child in Sumter County by a "pet python" is just the tip of a huge exotic, non-native animal problem.
Dealers and buyers should cover the cost of placing chips in all non-native species to ensure irresponsible owners can be found and fined. Florida's fragile ecosystem is threatened by exotics in Boca Grande, Port Charlotte and the Everglades.
Sen. Bill Nelson has the right idea, but it needs to go further. We need to stop importing all non-native species, period.
