DADE CITY - Pasco County commissioners this morning get their first look at the proposed 2009-10 budget – a spending plan that promises to make major changes in the way county government responds to residents.
County Administrator John Gallagher will present the draft budget when the commission meets at 10 a.m. at the historic Pasco County courthouse.
The budget is only part of what promises to be a busy day for commissioners. Also on the agenda:
A plan to change health insurance providers for the second time in two years to avoid a 32 percent leap in premium costs. The proposed change comes with a 14 percent bump.
A plan for instituting layoffs – a first for the county – tied to cutting about 260 jobs from next year's budget.
The county's newly drafted strategic plan aimed at shifting Pasco's tax base away from its dependence on residential development and toward a more even mix of residential and nonresidential development.
Commissioners will spend the rest of the summer finding the mix of spending cuts and tax hikes, and the final budget will be reviewed in two public hearings in September.
