TAMPA - Spoto High School baseball coach Larry Benton has been suspended without pay after a June 26 arrest on a misdemeanor charge of soliciting someone to commit prostitution.
His suspension is effective today and is pending the outcome of the charges.
Benton, 50, was arrested at 6500 N. Nebraska Ave. He was released from jail the same day after posting $250 bail.
Benton has been Spoto's baseball coach since the program started in 2007. He has also coached at Tampa Bay Technical School and Leto.
He was hired in Hillsborough County in 2003 and teaches driver's education at Spoto.
During the 2009 season, Benton was suspended from coaching duties while school administrators investigated three undisclosed incidents. Spoto Principal Clyde Trathowen reinstated Benton within a week after the investigation revealed no wrongdoing.
