TAMPA - A 12-year-old Largo girl was the winner on "Jeopardy" Wednesday night, taking home $15,201.
More than 200 family and friends gathered at the home of Gabby D'Annunzio, who is in gifted-student programs at Fitzgerald Middle School and was featured on the game show as part of the annual Kids Week.
She was the only contestant who answered the Final "Jeopardy" question correctly. She correctly said North America and Australia are the only two continents besides Antarctica that have no landlocked countries.
The D'Annunzio family told Bay News 9 that some of her winnings will be used for a family vacation in Europe. The rest will go into a college fund.
More than 140,000 youngsters nationwide applied to be on the show. Gabby had to pass a series of tests during the audition process. She has said she initially thought she had failed. But she was one of 500 children to get called back for the final auditions in Dallas, where 15 were picked to appear on television. The episode was taped in Hollywood in March and aired Wednesday on WFTS, Channel 28.
Gabby is enrolled in a gifted-student program for math and science. She also is learning Mandarin Chinese and studies geography.
