TAMPA - The threatening weather has moved south of the Bay area, finally.
A 9:43 a.m. advisory from the National Weather Service in Ruskin said that thunderstorms are moving across Englewood, Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda. The system is moving at about 15 mph and carries winds gusting to 40 mph.
Earlier this morning, thunderstorms swept across Hillsborough County, prompting the weather service to issue a severe weather warning for southern parts of the county.
The storms are part of a system that drenched the Bay area this morning and is expected to continue for the better part of the day.
Thunderstorms have hovered over the Tampa Bay area for most of the morning, meteorologists said. The heavy rains caused flooding in low-lying areas, and standing water on roads slowed some commuters this morning
While a 60 percent chance of rain is expected today, a high pressure system will move across West Central Florida on Tuesday, lowering rain chances for the rest of the week, forecasters say.
There is a 40 percent chance of rain on Tuesday and 30 percent on Wednesday.
Today's highs will be in the upper 80s
