A Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputy towing a hog trailer was hit this afternoon by a pickup at the intersection of state roads 60 and 39, the sheriff's office said.

The deputy, Cpl. Bruce Harrell, received minor injuries in the 4:30 p.m. wreck. The driver of the other pickup truck, Robert John Gray, 47, of Tampa, suffered serious injuries and was taken to an area hospital to be treated for lacerations and internal injuries. The pig is fine.

Harrell was driving a Ford 250 pickup and was towing an enclosed trailer containing a hog in it that had been impounded. According to the sheriff's office, Harrell had stopped for a red light; once the light turned green, he entered the intersection and was hit by the pickup Gray was driving. A witness backed up Harrell's account of what happened, the sheriff's office said.

The hog trailer was knocked from Harrell's pickup and ended up in the intersection, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. The pig was loaded into another trailer and continued to its destination at the sheriff's livestock holding pen.

The wreck slowed traffic but neither road was closed.

Gray is expected to be charged with running a red light, the sheriff's office said.
