4 rising seniors receive invites to Area Code Games

Four Hillsborough County baseball players have been invited to play in the 2009 Area Code Games, a prestigious high school showcase entering its 23rd year.

Alonso pitcher Thomas Dorminy, Gaither outfielder Drew Doty, Bloomingdale infielder/outfielder Sal Giardina and Tampa Catholic catcher Shane Rowland have been extended invitations to participate in the eight-team tournament, Aug. 5-10 at Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif. All four players are rising seniors.

Approximately 200 players from around the nation are selected to participate in the event, which features the nation's top rising juniors and seniors.

Golf

King rising senior Kelsey Gibson has enjoyed a good couple of weeks on the golf course.

Gibson won the Marvin DeBolt Daily News Junior Golf Classic last week, shooting rounds of 69 and 68 on the par-72 Pines course at Fort Walton Beach Golf Club to earn a one-stroke victory over Gulf Breeze's Sarah Hicks, the two-time defending tournament champ.

That win came on the heels of a solid performance at the Florida Women's State Golf Association amateur stroke play championship in Sarasota. Gibson shot rounds of 72, 71 and 82 on the par-72 West course at Laurel Oak Country Club for a 9-over 225, which left her in a three-way tie for fifth, 11 strokes back of winner Alexandria Buelow of Palm City.

Gibson was one of several current and former Hillsborough County girls golfers in the 63-player field at FWSGA event, which was held July 10-12. Also in the tournament were current Durant standout Madison Opfer, and former county golfers Amy West (Durant), Jessica Alexander (Newsome) and Mackenzie Puryear (Plant).

West also managed a top-10 finish, tying for 10th after shooting 12-over 228 (77-75-76). Opfer tied for 17th (81-78-75-234), Alexander finished 22nd (82-75-78-235), and Puryear tied for 40th (83-84-81-248). In addition, former Pasco County standout Emily Van Etten (Mitchell) tied for 23rd after shooting 78-82-77-237.

Football

Riverview coach Bruce Gifford announced that three players from the Class of 2009 are moving on to the college ranks.

Defensive back Willie Timmons has signed with Division III Concordia University in Wisconsin, fullback Scott Cassidy has signed with Midland Lutheran, an NAIA program in Nebraska, and defensive back Lamarkus Dennis is headed to Jacksonville University as a preferred walk-on after obtaining an academic scholarship.

•Hillsborough High will hold its annual organizational meeting for the parents of all varsity and junior varsity football players at 7 p.m. July 30 in the school's auditorium. For information, call the Terriers field house at (813) 276-5653.
