SARASOTA - Once Jan Patrick Squire is released from Bayfront Medical Center, where he is recuperating after having been shot Saturday by Sarasota police, he can expect a trip to jail.

The Sarasota Police Department today released specifics to the charges awaiting the 38-year-old Sarasota man. Squire faces a count of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He was shot after he drove his pickup truck at one officer, then struck a different officer with the vehicle, Sarasota police say.

Squire was arrested shortly after midnight on Saturday at 1991 Main St. in Sarasota, police say. Patrol officers were dispatched to a parking garage at the address after receiving a report of a man in a red pickup truck displaying erratic behavior.

A patrol officer pulled up alongside the red pickup truck as the truck was headed toward the exit of the parking garage, Sarasota police said, and the officer told the driver to pull over.

Once the pickup truck stopped, another officer got out of her marked car, approached the pickup and told the driver, Squire, to turn the engine off, Sarasota police said. Squire looked directly at her, began revving his engine, dropped the truck into gear and hit the accelerator, Sarasota police said.

The truck made its way around a security guard cart, which meant it was now travelling directly at the woman officer, Sarasota police said. She began backing up toward her marked car, and the truck came within an arm's length of striking her, Sarasota police say. She believed Squire was going to strike her with his truck.

Then the truck started barreling toward a third officer who was standing near the exit of the parking garage, Sarasota police say. After the truck struck the officer, the officer fired his department-issue handgun, striking Squire once in the chest, Sarasota police say. Squire was then removed from the pickup truck and flown to Bayfront Medical Center, Sarasota police say.
