WESTCHASE - Mummies and pharaoh masks rested in columns to dry while 12-year-old Samantha Mitchell tried to corral a dozen elementary and middle school students into a pyramid formation to rap about King Tut.
Ancient Egypt had come to Westchase wrapped in song, dance and papier-mâche.
A mother and two Westchase Elementary teachers organized a two-week summer camp, which started last week, to give children a creative outlet. The 34 campers divided their time each day between rehearsals for "Tales of Temples and Tombs," a musical, and arts projects related to Egypt.
"It appeals to every area of art, music, creativity," music teacher Vanessa Lewis said. "The kids excel at art and they can release in music."
Participants ranged from first- to eighth-graders, and art teacher Linda Whitelaw enjoyed seeing the interaction.
"I like the mixed group," she said. "The big kids help the little kids, and it motivates them to do better."
