LUTZ - About two dozen Catholic "Idol" wannabes showed up Sunday at the Bethany Retreat Center for the first round of auditions for the "Voice of An Angel" singing competition.
The contest, patterned after the immensely popular "American Idol" television show, is sponsored by God Squad Communication, a ministry of the Catholic Archdiocese of Miami.
After two years in Miami, "Voice of an Angel" is going statewide this year.
Finalists will emerge from each of Florida's seven Catholic dioceses. A winner will be selected in December.
Contestants range in age from 13 to 23 years and must be a member of a Florida parish or attend a Catholic school.
Sunday's contestants performed everything from opera, country, contemporary Christian and traditional church music, and had to sing a cappella.
Callbacks will be in the next few weeks. Those who get the call will audition Sept. 12 at Rock the Universe, a Christian rock megafest at Universal Studios in Orlando.
