INDIANAPOLIS - Tampa native Joie Chitwood announced Monday he will step down as president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway after Sunday's Allstate 400 at the Brickyard.
Chitwood, a longtime speedway official, became president and chief operating officer of the speedway in 2004. He said he is resigning to take on "new challenges," and will return to Florida to become vice president of business operations for the International Speedway Corporation in Daytona Beach.
His departure comes about a month after Tony George was ousted as president and chief executive officer of the IndyCar Series. George, who had been the speedway's president for 20 years and formed the IRL in 1994, was removed amid board members' concerns about his spending on IMS upgrades.
Jeff Belskus, a longtime IMS executive who was part of a new management team that stepped in after George's departure, will assume the daily responsibilities of managing the speedway.
