ARIPEKA - After getting a report of a car underwater, a Pasco County dive team was called out Tuesday morning to the area off Aripeka Road to search, finding a van, authorities said.
No one was inside the van and it had been reported as stolen, said sheriff's office spokesman Kevin Doll.
Pasco Fire Rescue dispatchers got a call shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday and went out to the area, west of U.S. 19, where there appeared to be fresh skid marks leading to the water.
Cattails poking out from the water were broken off as if something large crashed through them. Paramedics couldn't immediately see a vehicle from above the water but divers later located a Ford Econoline van in the old rock mine, now part of the Southwest Florida Water Management District's conservation land.
It's not uncommon for thieves to dump vehicles into bodies of water, Doll said.
