Brandon's Chris Colwill finished eighth in today's finals of the 3-meter springboard diving at the FINA World Championships in Rome.

The winner was the Olympic gold medalist from the 2008 Beijing Games, He Chong of China, with a six-dive total of 505.20 points.

Colwill's U.S. teammate, Troy Dumais, earned the silver medal with a score of 498.40. Dumais was sixth in the 2008 Olympics in this event. Canada's Alexandre Despatie earned the bronze with 490.30.

Colwill, 24, didn't have his best meet, but this was his first individual event at a major world championship in nearly two years. In Beijing, he was fourth in the 3-meter synchronized event with dive partner Jevon Tarantino. In today's finals, he scored 451.70. He struggled on his fourth dive to score just 63 points but nailed his sixth and final dive -- a reverse 3-1/2 -- to score 87.50.

"I had a better performance today [than Wednesday's semifinal round], but I know I'm capable of hitting 470 [points]," Colwill said.

Today's competition was Colwill's final event of the meet in Rome. Last week, he placed ninth in the 1-meter springboard.

Colwill is a graduate of Tampa Preparatory School and the University of Georgia.
