TAMPA - Bolstered by strong attendance in July, Florida Aquarium attendance in fiscal 2009 is about 1 percent lower than a year ago despite the poor economy, aquarium officials said Wednesday.
"We have been doing more TV advertising and a lot more with social media than in the past: Facebook, Twitter, using the Web to get the word out," spokesman Tom Wagner said.
Attendance from October through June was down 3 percent to 460,649, Wagner said.
However, July's attendance was up 15 percent through Tuesday to 64,709 visitors, compared with the same period a year ago, he said.
Last year's attendance for the fiscal year through Sept. 30 was 655,877.
