PLANT CITY - The Child Abuse Council has dedicated a new Plant City center in honor of Lorena Jaeb, a longtime supporter.
The Tampa-based nonprofit organization, which combats child abuse and neglect in Hillsborough County, is opening the Lorena Jaeb Rainbow Center in a building the council bought at 102 Palm Drive, off Baker Street. It replaces the council's original Plant City facility and allows for expansion of services, previously limited primarily to therapeutic child care, Executive Director Paul D'Agostino said.
Jaeb was honored by the council at a Wednesday reception at Plant City's Camellia Rose Tea Room.
"When we began services in Plant City in 1989," said D'Agostino, "Mrs. Jaeb gave us the seed money in order to do that. And throughout the years she's been very supportive of our services in Plant City."
Lorena Jaeb and her late husband, Robert, who married in 1941, founded the Shop 'N Go convenience store chain. In 1985, they sold their 450 stores to Circle K.
The couple's 1986 gift of $1.5 million to the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center led to the naming of the Robert and Lorena Jaeb Theater.
Robert Jaeb died Sept. 5, 2005, in Tampa at age 94.
