Perplexing vice president

We should tell Russian President Dmitri A. Medvedev to please not be upset by the statements by Vice President Joe Biden ("Biden's talk perplexes Russia," Views, July 26.)

Joe usually speaks without really thinking and has for many years. Few Americans pay any attention to what Joe says, and it is usually funny. His remarks about Russia this week were not humorous, which leads to the question of why he was selected as vice president. Only President Barack Obama, who made the decision, knows.

Personally, I think Don Rickles or Bob Newhart would have been a better choice.
