Firefighters have extinguished a fire that broke out on a boat at the Speckled Trout Marina this morning, Palm Harbor fire officials say.
The blaze at the marina, at 369 Bayshore Drive, was reported at 7 a.m., said Liz Monforti, a spokeswoman for Palm Harbor Fire Rescue. It was brought under control in 10 minutes.
The boat was severely damaged, and the one next to it might have sustained some damage related to the emanating heat, Monforti said.
The boat was stored on land in a storage facility at the time of the blaze.
Lisa Shellabarger, a Palm Harbor woman whose husband owns the boat next to the one that went up in flames, said her husband's boat was burnt on the right side. The cover on her husband's boat was also damaged, and speakers on the boat were melted.
The other boat, she said, was totaled, with the entire interior burnt out, she said.
Investigators believe the fire started in an area of the boat where the battery banks and wiring harness are located. A battery charge unit was in use and is also in the same vicinity as the origin of the fire, but investigators still have not determined the ignition source.
The fire does not appear to be suspicious.
